Linking London's Historic West End to the New East End

The Vision

A tree-lined ‘Healthy Street’ running from Old Street to Tottenham Court Road, where people stroll, linger and cycle with wider pavements, safe cycle tracks and calmer, safer junctions.

The Route

Old Street, Clerkenwell Road, Theobalds Road, Bloomsbury Way and New Oxford Street are congested, polluted and hostile to those walking and cycling. They feature very high cycling rates, and far too high collision and injury statistics.

I’m really impressed with how London Cycling Campaign has used innovative technology to bring their ideas to life... As we continue with our ambitious plans to get more Londoners walking and cycling, we will look closely at the details of these London Boulevard plans.

Will Norman, Walking & Cycling Commissioner, TfL

Who will benefit?

We all will. Businesses will get increased footfall from customers who want to linger. Residents will suffer less pollution and traffic noise. Pedestrians will benefit from safer crossings and better places to stroll, sit, play. People cycling will benefit from a far safer ride. And bus users will benefit from revamped stops and potentially bus/cycle only sections. We estimate the Boulevard could save millions a year in public health benefits from more people walking and cycling; reduced collisions; less pollution etc.

Boulevard for business

We are currently working with local businesses to study freight servicing and loading needs. We aim to use the London Boulevard to develop innovative, class-leading solutions to the complex problems of providing for pedestrians, those cycling and businesses too, all while reducing emissions and motor vehicle movements in the area. If you represent a business located on or near the London Boulevard route and want to know more, please email boulevard@lcc.org.uk

We can transform a snarled up and polluted route, that connects the beating heart of East London's new industries with a revitalised West End, into a world class, living, breathing boulevard.
Good for Londoners, good for business, good for transport.

Ashok Sinha, CEO London Cycling Campaign

This is a fantastic opportunity to create a flagship Healthy Street in central London linking up with the pedestrianisation of Oxford Street. This is not only about improving the lives of everyone who commutes along this strategic route; it's about making the whole area a better place to live, work and enjoy.
